Steve Thygerson is a professor of Environmental and Occupational Health in the Department of Public Health at BYU. He is the director of seven Global Health Internships placing over 80 students with international experiences each year. Prior to his BYU appointment in 2008, he worked for nine years in various occupational and environmental health settings in the public and private sector including U.S. Federal OSHA, WCF Insurance, Eastman Kodak Company and other consulting companies.
He is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and Emergency Medical Technician. He is a past-chair of the International Affairs Committee of the American Industrial Hygiene Association. As a volunteer member of Workplace Health Without Borders (WHWB), he mentors and consults with other occupational health professionals and provides training worldwide. Those countries include Nepal, Thailand, Belgium, Spain, Brazil, Peru, Fiji, South Africa, Mozambique, Ethiopia, and Pakistan. He is the faculty advisor for the BYU Occupational Health student section and routinely takes students to these countries for global health and safety research. In 2025, this included 90 students to 6 countries on 5 continents. He is very involved in several professional organizations. In 2025, he was awarded the American Society of Safety Professional’s Safety Professional of the Year. He is a two-time Fulbright Specialists working in Nepal and South Africa.
For the past 20 years, he has authored first aid, CPR and wellness books including “Wilderness First Aid: Emergency Care in Remote Locations” and “Wilderness First Aid Field Guide”. He owns a health and safety consulting company.
He and his amazing wife, Adrianne (co-director for the global health programs), have 4 children, two daughters-in-law and one grandson. While not at work they love to hike, bike, ski, garden and set out on family backpacking trips.
